The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka is a striking architectural and cultural landmark designed by Foster + Partners. Located on the Yumeshima waterfront, it opened to the public in April 2025 and has since become one of the most visited pavilions at the event. Visitors enter the pavilion through a verdant forecourt planted with Saudi Arabian flora and proceed through narrow streets leading to the central Saudi Courtyard. This courtyard serves as a venue for performances and events, transforming from a space for quiet reflection during the day to a lively cultural hub at night.
The pavilion's design draws inspiration from traditional Saudi Arabian villages, featuring winding alleyways, shaded courtyards, and ambient passageways that guide visitors through a journey of discovery. The structure's massing recalls the organic shapes of these villages, and computational fluid dynamics simulations were employed to allow cool winds from the west into the streets during the height of summer.
It incorporates sustainable elements, including low-carbon materials, energy-efficient lighting, photovoltaic systems for power generation, and rainwater recycling. Especially, the pavilion's façade is crafted from a lightweight Saudi stone composite, enabling easy deconstruction and possible reassembly at future sites, thus prolonging its lifespan beyond the Expo. The project is striving to attain the highest rating under Japan's green building certification (CASBEE S) and is on course to achieve the Net Zero Operational Carbon goal.
