The Kai Tak Turn was a testament to Hong Kong’s dynamic blend of heritage and innovation. Pilots had to execute a sharp right-hand turn over Kowloon to align with Runway 13—a maneuver that became legendary for its proximity to the city’s dense skyline.
Designed by the studio miriamandtom, the Kai Tak Turn bench pays homage to the dramatic approach aircraft made when landing at Kai Tak Airport. The bench’s form evokes this iconic turn, with a flowing, aerodynamic design crafted from 22 welded aluminum alloy panels. The structure features a gently curved, floating silhouette that references both aviation wings and the fluidity of fabric in the wind. This fusion of “Fabric” (a nod to Nan Fung’s textile heritage) and “Flight” (a tribute to Kai Tak’s aviation legacy) encapsulates the area’s transformation from industrial to cultural hub.
Kai Tak Turn is located at Airside, 2 Concorde Road, San Po Kong, Hong Kong. This area is easily accessible via public transportation, including the nearby Kai Tak MTR Station being a convenient option. The installation is situated within a vibrant public space that integrates art, design, and community engagement.
