The Tianjin Juilliard School project under the design leadership of Diller Scofidio + Renfro is composed of 4 primary volumes interconnected by bridges housing offices performance halls, recital halls and support offices. The central void is a column free enclosed atrium flooded with controlled natural light tuned to suite greenery providing visitors and occupants elevated sense of community and comfort.
Given the sensitive needs for sound isolation and protection of instruments, the key spaces are designed with double skin cavity wall construction carefully engineered and constructed for maximum protection against sound transmission, solar protection and condensation mitigation under extreme cold winters and hot summers.
Enclosure Systems and Materials
Glass Roof: Operable skylight systems are triple glazed with motorized panels automated for smoke evacuation and gutter integrated acting as the primary structural beams.
Primary Volumes: Triple glazed rolled steel and steel plate box framing stick system. Opaque areas are GFRC cladding over aluminum skinned insulated walls and heated/vented cavities with interior insulated block or concrete walls. Composite wood panels line some of the undercut areas.
Bridges: Exoskeletal trusses are wrapped in high performance insulation to reduce thickness of build up and cladd in reenforced stainless steel resulting in uniform flatness and precision.
